My out of pocket for all treatment ran about $5000, with health insurance picking up around $135,000 for all treatment (chemo, radiation, surgery, Herceptin). The chemo portion billed to the insurance company was, total, about $35,000.

Understanding what chemotherapy does is a must for this question, and then we take costs into consideration. Not all breast cancer patients have the same kind of breast cancer. I believe that it is a general term and you can have twenty breast cancer patients and not one of them will have the exact same breast cancer. We had Triple Negative Breast Cancer Stage 2 B. This cancer is very aggressive breast cancer and it grows rapidly. The costs include a Port A Cath because our oncologist would NOT accept us if we did not get one surgically implanted. Because chemotherapy destroys good cells as well as bad cells we needed a drug that boosts white blood counts in the body. This drug Neupogen at the hospital pharmacy for a week supply costs, $12,695.00. Initially they said it was not covered by our insurance carrier, but a phone call from our oncologist was the difference and they arranged for us to be able to order it through mail with a month supply for $200.00 a month. If we DID NOT have insurance that cost alone would be $190,425.00. The port cost with all the things needed in surgery was about $3,500. We had over 27 weeks of 3 types of chemotherapy to fight TNBC. Our expense was about $2,000 a week. This included: Blood work, visit with oncologist, infusion of drugs. So a rough estimate of only chemotherapy would be about $58,000. With the port about $61,000. Overall our cancer expense is over $375,000 and still counting. Stage one breast cancer has a great survival rate of 95%. Without insurance the survival rate drops to 52%. Why? Because patients cannot afford treatments so they don't do it. That is why we need a national health care plan.
