Why does breast cancer get more attention than other cancers

Why does breast cancer get more attention than other cancers?
I am a woman, and I worry about breast cancer. But, I am also curious as to why breast cacner gets more attention than any other cancer, like say prostate cancer. I think that prostate cancer, and other men's cancers, are being highly ignored and improperly treated, while breast and other women;s cancers are getting more attention. I also believe September is prostate cancer awareness month, and that breast cancer is still getting more attention. I only bring this up, because I recently lost an uncle to prostate cancer, and this was because when he went for treatments, the doctors didn't have the proper vaccines, and even told us that most of the vaccines were being used to cure breast and ovarion cancers in women. Not to offend, but what ever happened to equal rights? I think prostate cancer should get the same amount of attention as breast cancer, just as I feel men's cancers should get the same attention as women's cancers.

I guess because its more common than the other types.
2 :
women have worked hard for breast cancer awareness & that is a good thing.
3 :
its more commin, and girls worrie more about it. most casses revirt in cutting off breats. so, we git scared.
4 :
It's because the cancer is on the breast, and us guy's care about the breast's.
5 :
well i could kill the doctors for you sometimes i just get the itch to kill
6 :
That's really nice of you. Breast cancer gets more attention because breasts get more attention, and it's feminine, and as a society we are taught to take care of women. Prostrate cancer has been getting a little more attention like at the store they dont ask you to exclusively donate to breast cancer now they have some prostrate cancer.
7 :
In a perfect world all disease would get equal billing. But isn't prostrate cancer easier to treat, less likely to kill you sooner?
8 :
Breast cancer gets more attention because it can be caught early and taken care of before it gets bad. And the prevention of it is so easy. More and more women get it and catch it before it becomes debilitating and causes death.
9 :
If it is popular, most likely it is a money racket. Alot of breast cancers should have second opinion. Prostate....A mans best friend is tomatoes when it comes to prostate. There is a herb that will help prevent prostate troubles, its is Saw Palmeta...(spelled wrong) Anyway, U are correct, men should eat more tomatoes or tomatoe products, pumpkin seeds is good too.
10 :
men refuse to see a doctor unless blood is pouring out. I was sick with cancer for a year befor i did anything. also you cant see or feel [ with out finger in butt test witch no man wants to have ] prostate cancer. Breast cancer IS NOT more common then prostate cancer.....
11 :
I understand your frustrated but prostate cancer has been known for many years to be the leading cause of death in men. But just more recently they've been trying to make women aware of their risks. And to be honest the women that have been diagnosed with breast cancer are the ones doing all the work to raise awareness. Men have to give the same effort to help others. And I am truly sorry for your lost. p.s you can help raise awareness by starting a foundation or even making posters and hanging them up, point being, make a statement.
12 :
Breast cancer is the most common type of cancer among women. Each year, 182,000 women are diagnosed with breast cancer and 43,300 die. One woman in eight either has or will develop breast cancer in her lifetime. In addition, 1,600 men will be diagnosed with breast cancer and 400 will die this year. If detected early, the five-year survival rate exceeds 95%. Mammograms are among the best early detection methods, yet 13 million U.S. women 40 years of age or older have never had a mammogram.
13 :
First off, sorry for your loss. The reason that Breast cancer gets more attention than any other cancer is that breast cancer is the most popular type of all cancers. Followed by prostate, lung, and liver. Another reason that breast and prostate are 1 and 2 is that they are the easiest to diagnose and treat and locate for that matter. They have a better success rate of killing it copared to other cases. Men can check themselves all the time for prostate. Women just have to go get a mamograhm.
14 :
because famous celebrities gets breast cancer. So when someone famous gets cancer. The cancer will become as famous as the patient itself.
15 :
um...for women the big one is breast as you state..but men they always talk about testicular cancer...probably because people are so worried about their looks, mostly all other cancers are internal, except skin...and maybe you should get a new doctor since i've never heard of a hospital not having the proper treatments to fight cancer..and i thought someone takes vaccines before they get a disease to become immune to it? no one gets cancer vaccinations from what i know...equals rights deal with people, not what cancer gets the most attention..i think you should make sure your stuff makes sense before you post anything else
16 :
Cancer is cancer, no matter where you get it, and the end results if left untreated will be the same. Maybe woman talk about it more openly than men do, hence we get more attention. I am a cancer patient myself (breast cancer). At least I have my life, who cares about the breast. I certainly dont.
17 :
First of all, may a clarify something. Vaccines aren't used in the treatment of breast cancer or prostate cancer. One has just been developed to help prevent HPV, which causes a large percentage of Cervical Cancer. Breast Cancer gets so much attention because women and men have found an issue that they feel very strongly about, similar to political PACs. The female breast, whether we like it or not is considered a sex organ by many and people don't like the idea of having to loose them. Did you also know that men can get breast cancer? I sat next to a guy while doing chemo that was also being treated for it While volunteering at the recent Avon Breast Cancer Walk in Long Beach, one volunteer was wearing a sign "SAVE SECOND BASE"
18 :
Where from you got the impression that women cancers get more attention than that of men for different cancers. I beg to differ with you as you are wrong. All the cancers - serious or simple - are attended equally by doctors, but I feel you have come to this wrong conclutions because the brest cancer cases are more than other cancers. Worldwide, it is the most common form of cancer in females, affecting approximately one out of twelve to thirteen women who reach age nineteen or at some stage of their life in the Western world. It is (after lung cancer) the second most fatal cancer in women. Lung, Pancreas, Prostrate, Brain, Liver, colon, throat cancer in men and Cervix, breast, lung, Colon, in women are the cancers noticed in more numbers. Please note that Cancer is still an inigma and it comes out all of a sudden without giving any warning bell and that too when they are in advanced stage. A considerable percentage in both sex are fatel. Some madicines are in scarce and not available. So it is not correct to blame the medical professionals for any untoward happening in the treatment of this disease. Further some oncologist are expert in some cancer surgery and they can not treat all the cancers. It is our duty to get the correct person who can deliver the goods to us. They are doing their best and we should repose our faith in them. Ofcourse we can have second opinions always and take action. I am writing this so long becuase of my own experience in 3/4 cases in men and ladies.
19 :
i don't think any cancers are being ignored or improperly treated , its just that breast cancer awareness is very strong . my son has brainstem cancer , its awareness isn't strong . more people need to put the word out there , get the message to new people , not just the hospitals and such .without the word being out there , donations for research are not as plentiful . we need more research for all different types of cancer.
20 :
There is much money to be made out of teating for breast cancer. Take a look at the site below which explains many misubderstood things about the cancer industry, and has some natural cures too. Alsp take a look at the vaccination link for a very informative read.
21 :
i am a young mother with 2 small children and i have breast cancer. i think breast cancer gets more attention because 1 in 9 women will develop the disease and because breast cancer is affecting women younger and younger. many moms out there have breast cancer with young children. many young woman want to have children but somehow can't or have to postpone due to breast cancer. there is too many young children out there with their mommies fighting breast cancer.
22 :
I think it's because the number of breast cancer patients are higher if compared with prostate cancer patients. Thus, the title of breast cancer is more in the 'red alert' zone..

Hi there ! Usually our "guide"..help us out..right ? best wishes !
2 :
start with review of the topic http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/entrez/query.fcgi?CMD=search&DB=pubmed Your proposal should include background, hypothesis, material and method used. The implication of your research Good luck
3 :
I've got the answer for you! Go to www.pubmed.com, a biomedical citation database containing over 15 million scientific citations. Type in "breast cancer" and "tumeric" for instance, or "breast cancer" and "soy," and see what you find. You can also go to www.vitasearch.com and do the same. You will be amazed by how much research exists demonstrating the efficacy of things like flax lignans, soy genistein, tumeric, scullcap, and various other herbs and foods for not just preventing but effectively destroying (in some cases) ductal carcinoma!

How do you get breast cancer

How do you get breast cancer?
Not that I want to, I want to just look out for these stuff. Like sleeping in your bra day & night (someone said that). My right nipple is stinging or hurting and idk why! 14 y/o so i think I'm too young to have breast cancer
Cancer - 5 Answers
Random Answers, Critics, Comments, Opinions :
1 :
it is most often hereditary.
2 :
Microwave your boob
3 :
Wow, where did you hear that one from? I'm pretty sure you dont have breast cancer. Put simply, it's due to an increase in hormones, and can also be linked to your genes ( if you have a family history) or even radiation exposure. Don't worry.
4 :
Sleeping with your bra on is NOT going to cause breast cancer - nor does it make your boobs not grow. Both are myths. Cancer is an abnormal growth. Usually impossible to stop, unless it's skin or lung - which is self-inflicted. I doubt you have breast cancer. You are young. Nipples can hurt/sting if it's cold or if it's rubbing against your clothes.
5 :
There are a variety of risk factors for breast cancer. Sleeping in a bra is NOT one of them. Being 14 is also NOT a risk factor. The biggest risk factor is gender, being a woman puts ou at risk, 99% of those diagnosed are female. The next biggest risk factor is age, 80% of those diagnosed are over 50. Other risk factors include starting menstruation early or finishing late, having a first child late, not breast feeding, obesity, lack of Vit D, family history etc. Most of these risk factors are less important. Many people cite hereditary factors as being a major factor but, in fact, less than 10% of breast cancers are due to hereditary factors. In a teenager, things like tenderness, lumpiness, enevenness etc are usually due to normal breast development and hormones, what you are describing can also be caused by irritation from a badly fitting bra or reaction to washing powder residue. Talk to your mother or school nurse if concerned, they will be able to reassure you or judge if it needs further investigation by a Dr

GOOGLE pink breast cancer ribbons
2 :
I like the bow idea instead of the ribbon. But I would do it small and maybe somewhere different. With the ones that mean so much, smaller is bigger. Like on the inside of your wrist or hip bone, or even on chest. Wherever you like really. Certainly Google it, it's a basic bow design. Also if you like you could make one side of the hanging ends longer to have her name or something like that written on it. Good luck!
3 :
I would take a rough sketch to a tattoo artist or go shop for a tattoo artist and talk to them. Look at portfolios and talk to family, friends, and strangers alike WHO HAVE INK...talk to different artist...and ask questions about the artist experience and how they got started. Let the one you choose draw something up for you...it will then be original and they can add their touches from his experience to make it pop...and really give it a bit you in the ink...to make it more personal for you. Also, it wont just be something you found online...or something others may have...it will be your original ink to signify your moms survival of breast cancer. Good tattoo artists can take a simple idea and make it come to life within your specs...and make it look really good and possilbly add a dimension you didnt think about. If it's just a simple ribbon, they shouldnt need a drawing, they can create some great stuff without a drawing. Best of Luck!
4 :
omg my friend just got the pink ribbon around the steam of some kind of blossom on the top of her foot for doing the three day every year and it is so awesome.'i think you should put it with something else

What does breast cancer feel like

What does breast cancer feel like?
Could you tell me where in the breast the lumps occur, what they feel like, etc.? What are some other symptoms of breast cancer? Are hair loss and tremors some symptoms? At what age can you get breast cancer? Any other info I should know? Thanks.

There are MANY different kinds of cancer with different symptoms. Breast cancer is uncommon under the age of 30. Hair loss occurs if chemo/radiation treatment is used. Click on the red words. http://www.breastcancer.org/ "Teenage girls who smoke increase their risk of developing breast cancer before they reach menopause, according to a report in the Oct. 5 issue of the journal The Lancet (Vol. 360: 1044-1049). The authors said the risk is almost double if young women start smoking within five years of their first menstrual cycle. Pierre R. Band, MD, and a team of Canadian scientists found that the chance of breast cancer in women by age 50 was 80% higher than if they hadn't started smoking at a young age." quote http://www.cancer.org/docroot/NWS/content/NWS_1_1x_Teenage_Smoking_Linked_To_Breast_Cancer.asp
2 :
I'm a ten year survivor of breast cancer. Here goes. Tumours can occur in any part of the breast. Generally they are not painful at the outset. The one form of breast cancer that is painful from the start is a nasty little beast known as Inflammatory breast cancer. All women's breasts are somewhat lumpy and nodular to the touch. This is why monthly breast self examination after age twenty is recommended. The woman becomes familiar with the normal look and feel of her breasts, and any changes become immediately apparent ( lumps, orange peel skin, thickening etc.) Mine felt like a large kidney bean that was not too mobile. Cancer usually anchors itself to the blood stream somewhere. Hair loss is not a symptom of breast cancer. It 's a side effect of chemotherapy. Tremors are not a sign of breast cancer either. Breast cancer in women under thirty is rare. 1% of all cases in the US occur in women under thirty. I was 43 and considered young for breast cancer. A good reference is found here. Risk Factors When you're told that you have breast cancer, it's natural to wonder what may have caused the disease. But no one knows the exact causes of breast cancer. Doctors seldom know why one woman develops breast cancer and another doesn't. Doctors do know that bumping, bruising, or touching the breast does not cause cancer. And breast cancer is not contagious. You can't catch it from another person. Doctors also know that women with certain risk factors are more likely than others to develop breast cancer. A risk factor is something that may increase the chance of getting a disease. Some risk factors (such as drinking alcohol) can be avoided. But most risk factors (such as having a family history of breast cancer) can't be avoided. Studies have found the following risk factors for breast cancer: * Age: The chance of getting breast cancer increases as you get older. Most women are over 60 years old when they are diagnosed. * Personal health history: Having breast cancer in one breast increases your risk of getting cancer in your other breast. Also, having certain types of abnormal breast cells (atypical hyperplasia, lobular carcinoma in situ [LCIS], or ductal carcinoma in situ [DCIS]) increases the risk of invasive breast cancer. These conditions are found with a breast biopsy. * Family health history: Your risk of breast cancer is higher if your mother, father, sister, or daughter had breast cancer. The risk is even higher if your family member had breast cancer before age 50. Having other relatives (in either your mother's or father's family) with breast cancer or ovarian cancer may also increase your risk. * Certain genome changes: Changes in certain genes, such as BRCA1 or BRCA2, substantially increase the risk of breast cancer. Tests can sometimes show the presence of these rare, specific gene changes in families with many women who have had breast cancer, and health care providers may suggest ways to try to reduce the risk of breast cancer or to improve the detection of this disease in women who have these genetic changes. Also, researchers have found specific regions on certain chromosomes that are linked to the risk of breast cancer. If a woman has a genetic change in one or more of these regions, the risk of breast cancer may be slightly increased. The risk increases with the number of genetic changes that are found. Although these genetic changes are more common among women than BRCA1 or BRCA2, the risk of breast cancer is far lower. * Radiation therapy to the chest: Women who had radiation therapy to the chest (including the breasts) before age 30 are at an increased risk of breast cancer. This includes women treated with radiation for Hodgkin lymphoma. Studies show that the younger a woman was when she received radiation treatment, the higher her risk of breast cancer later in life. * Reproductive and menstrual history: o The older a woman is when she has her first child, the greater her chance of breast cancer. o Women who never had children are at an increased risk of breast cancer. o Women who had their first menstrual period before age 12 are at an increased risk of breast cancer. o Women who went through menopause after age 55 are at an increased risk of breast cancer. o Women who take menopausal hormone therapy for many years have an increased risk of breast cancer. * Race: In the United States, breast cancer is diagnosed more often in white women than in African American/black, Hispanic/Latina, Asian/Pacific Islander, or American Indian/Alaska Native women. * Breast density: Breasts appear on a mammogram (breast x-ray) as having areas of dense and fatty (not dense) tissue. Women whose mammograms show a larger area of dense tissue than the mammograms of women of the same age are at increased risk of breast cancer. * History of taking DES: DES was given
3 :
Firstly, your Q&A shows that you're 17. As such, your chances of breast cancer are as close to zero as makes almost no difference. There is no need for you to be checking your breasts, and doing so may worry you unnecessarily. The American Cancer Society and other cancer organisations recommend that women begin breast self examination at no younger than 20, if then. Before that it's pointless; firstly because there are so many hormonal changes that there is no 'normal' - and self examination is about a woman knowing what's normal for her and reporting any changes. And secondly because the chance of breast cancer is almost nil. Breast cancer is almost unheard of in under 25s (let alone teens) and fewer than 0.1% of all those diagnosed are under 30. Only 5% are under 40 and most (80%) are over 50. When I was diagnosed with breast cancer I was classed as 'young' and allocated to the breast care nurse whose special interest was 'breast cancer in younger women'; I was 50. Most breast lumps, even in women over 50, aren't cancerous. At your age any changes you notice in your breasts are almost certainly normal hormonal development. No, hair loss and tremors are never symptoms of breast cancer

i heard somewhere that if you drink cow milk, you have a better chance of getting it i know it's somewhat hereditary but try to drink soymilk instead! good luck!
2 :
try not to drink large amounts of alcohol, stay away from smoking and second hand smoking, oral contraceptives give a high risk for breast cancer , try not to eat BBQ food in large quantities because they contain Aromatic Polycyclic hydrocarbons that cause breast cancer, eat fish rich in Omega fatty acids at least 3 times a week, don't drink milk with hormone in it, or chicken with hormones or antibiotics, do plenty of excercise , eat lots of fruit and vegetables, and since you are at high risk of developing breast cancer , do frequent self breast exams and mamogram 1 a year. hope this helps, good luck and stay healthy.
3 :
How afraid are you How much energy are you putting into the possibility Where is your strength (do you believe in yourself) Are you going to fall in line.....or think something more positive Fear is cancer and killing Life is living and proceeding with strength (no guarantees)
4 :
www.cancer.org is a good web site for information.

There are too many ways to prevent it but you can watch your what you eat, exercise, start getting examined early as possible. Stay away from unnecessary Hormones(HRT drugs) You may also ask about genetic testing to see if you have the breast cancer gene. In the most extreme cases you can elect to have your breast removed which will rid your body of all breast tissue and lower your changes to something like 5% or lower. This percent comes from the fact that when the reconstrute your breast they do use some tissue like your nipples etc. I don't know if I would go that far but that is all I have to share on the issue. Hope you stay healthy

Um...does your teacher know what she's doing? There is no one gene that causes breast cancer. And you can't exclude environmental factors, such as being exposed to carcinogens. The "cancer" alleles that are inherited do not mean that you will get breast cancer, they just mean that you have a greater chance of getting it at some point in your life. Perhaps your teacher is referring to the BRCA1 and BRCA2 genes? ...I think you need to speak with your teacher. Get her to help clarify things for you. Because she seems to be on a completely different wave length to reality

I just found out that I have breast cancer with calcifcations. I was wondering what they do for that type of cancer.

RADIATION THERAPY
2 :
There is a new treatment for cancer (especially breast) dealing with lasers. Do a search and you can find it. I had oral cancer and didn't find about this until I had already gone through the tradition chemo/radiation. Believe me I wish I had known I would have tried it first. Assuming you have or know some one with cancer Good luck and I do wish you them the very best.
3 :
i have breast cancer two...calcifications are deposits of calcium usually not cancerous.but where you have breast cancer two they will treat you with...Mastectomy: Surgery to remove all or part of the breast and sometimes other tissue.Chemotherapy: Treatment with drugs to destroy cancer cells. Often used in addition to surgery or radiation f the cancer has spread, has come back (recurred), or when there is a strong chance it will recur. Radiation Therapy: Treatment with high-energy rays (such as x-rays) to eliminate or shrink cancer cells before or after surgery, or in some cases as the main treatment. that is the usual treatment...good luck to you....ive been going through treatment for a year now... found out april2005 i ahd cancer....if you wont to talk e- mail me ....
