How do you check for breast cancer? What are the signs? I know you can feel a lump, but how do you find this lump? Will it be very obvious if you have a lump in your breast?

self exams and checking in the mirror. If you feel anything abnormal call your doctor. early detection saves lives.

Lara, your Q&A shows that you're a teenager of school age. As such there is no need for you to be doing breast self examinations. The American Cancer Society and other cancer organisations recommend that women begin breast self examination at the age of 20. Before that it's pointless; firstly because there are so many hormonal changes that there is no 'normal' - and self examination is about a woman knowing what's normal for her and reporting any changes. And secondly because the chance of breast cancer is almost nil. Breast cancer is almost unheard of in under 25s, and fewer than 0.1% of those diagnosed are under 30. Only 5% are under 40 and 80% are over 50. Any breast changes you notice at your age, including lumps, will almost certainly be normal hormonal activity as your breasts grow and develop

Self exams are very important. Also, getting checked out by your family doctor and having him order a mammo. If they find reason after the mammo to look into it being cancer they will probably order a biopsy. If they do ask to be tested for the HER2 gene (a gene found related to cancer
