the majority of tumors occur around the nipple and in the upper outer quadrant (known as the tail of spence). EDIT: when it comes to breast cancer, genetics (for once) plays an extremely minor role.

The upper outer quadrant. But they can occur anywhere in the breast.

If you think of the breast in 4 quarters then it is most common to get a lump in the upper outside of the breast. GO TO YOUR DOCTOR NOW- it is probably nothing but a cyst or a blocked milk duct but you should never delay in getting it checked. I wish you all the best-I am worrying that you will not go to the Doctor. If you are like me the worry of it will make you feel ill- go and put your mind at rest- please X

Don't delay your diagnosis and see your doctor asap. You cannot assess yourself whether or not the lump you have is malignant (cancerous). You should not scare her unless a dr. tells you it's cancer. But you should see your dr. right away. BTW, the fact that you have a first degree relative (your mom) with cancer increases the risk that you have/will have breast cancer.

First and foremost BOTH you and your mom's health concerns are just as important as both of you will need each other for support during this time! I am a volunteer health advocate and each day I listen to countless testimonies of women, men and children who are grateful for seeking professional medical advice during the early stages of detection. As you seek immediate professional medical advice, here are a couple of great cancer websites: http://forthefightagainstcancer.webs.com http://www.topix.com/cancer
