It could be. She should probably get checked out.

Any woman or man can get breast cancer. Since she is breastfeeding it is likely a blocked duct, mammary infection or a benign cyst. She should get it checked ASAP but there is no reason to think she has cancer until she has been seen by a doctor. My sister gets cysts on her breasts and they have not been cancerous yet and she has had 4 of them.

Of course women who breastfeed can get breast cancer. So can women who don't. So can men. The lump is probably a benign cyst, but tell her to get a breast exam if she's concerned. Benign cysts are like small calcium deposits that go away by themselves.

The fact that your stepmother is young enough to have a baby puts her in a low risk group for breast cancer. Most women diagnosed with breast cancer are postmenopausal, with 80% being over 50; only 5% are under 40 and fewer than 0.1% are under 30. Most breast lumps, even in women over 50, aren't cancer; at least 80% of those considered suspicious enough for testing turn out to be benign. As she's breastfeeding it's far more likely that this is hormonal. If it persists, she should speak to her doctor for reassurance

Yes you can get breast cancer if you're breast feeding but it's less likely. It more than likely is a benign cyst. She can have it checked easily at her doctor's office. He or she can do a needle insertion into the lump and they can tell if it's a cyst or not. Takes just seconds. She could just have blocked ducts too. Under the armpit is less likely too for breast cancer. I found a lump more than 10 years ago in the upper outer quadrant of my right breast. This area is a a common place. I cured myself of breast cancer naturally and turned down chemo, radiation and surgery. I chose to eat a raw food diet and did lots of juicing. I'm still in perfect health today. No sign of breast cancer or any other ailment. Nurse Sue
