Why is it that everyone is only focused on breast cancer

Why is it that everyone is only focused on breast cancer?
Breast cancer is the LEAST deadly cancer out there. Why do people forget about ovarian cancer, melanoma, leukemia, and other things like cystic fibrosis and brain tumors? There are even more that are worse than those cancers, such as pancreatic cancer, and MANY more. Why can't we have fundraisers for ALL of them? Not just breast cancer...

Well, people r focused on all types on cancer. But, the reason that people focus on that a lot is because it affects A LOT of women, and it can even affect men. It is the cancer that a women is most likely to get. But, women can get other cancers too. But they r in high risk of breast cancer. The hype for breast cancer in women is like the hype of prostate cancer in men.
2 :
Because everyone who has every had breast cancer, or lost someone To Breast Cancer is doing something about it, and being Proactive about their health. I know I am. If you had breast cancer you would feel the same way. I have known at least 10 people who have died from Breast Cancer, and there are more out there like me. So please don't say it is the least deadly, it is DEADLY to those who have DIED. Enough Said.
3 :
you have something there and not that all those others aren't inportant I think they push ans stress on breast cancer because it can also be deadly so thats why you should do monthly breast checks to make sure you have no lumps in your breast and if you do then get to your doctor as soon as possible . I think they push breast cancer so much because they know how most females don't want to lose a breast from breast cancer just think how you would feel if you found a lump in your breast and the doctor said that your right breast would have to be removed how would you feel being a female that you would only have one breast ?I undestand that all those other cancers are inportant to but there is prostrate cancer to for males thats why all males should be checking there prostrate for lumps to just like females . but you have a very good point and maybe some one needs to start having fund rasiers for those others cancers . good luck
4 :
You are misinformed; breast cancer is not the least deadly of cancers. In the US alone an average of 113 women die of breast cancer every day - that's one every 15 minutes. In the UK that average is 33 a day. But yes, it has a higher profile than other types of cancer, and the reason is simple - sheer hard work. Breast cancer awareness campaigns and BC Awareness Month started as a campaign by ordinary women, many of them with breast cancer, to raise awareness so that people knew the symptoms, examined themselves regularly, attended their routine mammograms etc. Enthusiastic participation and hard work by women made it grow into something nationally, then internationally, recognised (and then big business cashed in - but that's another story). People who campaign around illnesses are usually concerned with the illness that's affected them or their family. I know a couple who have a child with a very rare and life-threatening condition (not a cancer). Much of their time is now taken up with campaigning around this condition - fund raising and agitating for more funding for research, more education, more awareness etc. Individuals don't have unlimited time, and choose their campaigns. And that's what the women who started the breast cancer awareness campaign did, and worked their socks off. There are other cancer awareness months, weeks, ribbons etc; but the fact is none has had the sheer hard work put into it that breast cancer awareness has. There is nothing to stop any group of people starting a campaign for awareness of ovarian cancer, melanoma, leukaemia, cystic fibrosis or brain cancer. There is nothing to stop you doing it, if these are causes close to your heart - and good for you if they are. You'd have to be prepared to be as dedicated and work as hard as those women worked around breast cancer though
5 :
Felicia >>> Chemo Angel has the right reply to your question posted There are many people who die from breast cancer I myself fortunately wasnt one of them
6 :
You really don't know what you're talking about. I have brain cancer and I'm not jealous lol... Breast cancer is the number one cause of cancer death in Hispanic women. It is the second most common cause of cancer death in white, black, Asian/Pacific Islander, and American Indian/Alaska Native women. With lung cancer being the number one killer in the aforementioned group..MUCH research and great discoveries are being made in the prevention, treatment and cure of lung cancer...You HAVE heard of it haven't you???
7 :
“Everyone” is not focused on breast cancer. It is not the “LEAST” deadly cancer out there. I don’t know which “people” you are referring to, but no one I work with forgets any other cancer. We do have fundraisers for all of them

Why is there so much hype on Breast Cancer

Why is there so much hype on Breast Cancer?
i mean there are millions of other types of cancers out there but why is there so much publicity on breast cancer?

I work in Oncology and they ALL suck! F#ck cancer! I'm so sick of going home crying!
2 :
Breast cancer has so many advocates. It seems that other cancers are in need of advocates - so please feel free to join those causes that are close to your heart. The "hype" as you called it for breast cancer support started somewhere after all.
3 :
Because October is breast cancer awareness month.
4 :
i think its cause their so many survivors. since they have survived it they want to celebrate it && help others that may have been diagnosed with it get through it && put the word out their to get mammograms. its a very legit concern && should be in the spot light.
5 :
Because "We" As Breast Cancer Patients, Survivors, are Pro-Active about our health. If there is a cancer that YOU Want to be pro-active about, feel free! But please don't call it "HYPE". Unless you have HAD Breast Cancer, or know someone who had DIED From it, I can see how it would be Nothing to you. But to US It does.
6 :
Because women, bless them, network. If they know someone with cancer, they want to help, and if they are affected by breast cancer, they do all they can to hasten recovery, and help others avoid it. Men, on the other hand, are not good at promoting prostate cancer awareness, that's just how it is.
7 :
Beats me! I have had it and i'm sick of pink ribbons and even talking about it

Can anyone help with a specialist regarding breast cancer in louisiana

Can anyone help with a specialist regarding breast cancer in louisiana?
I am looking for a referral for a really good breast cancer specialist in and around the New Orleans Or Baton Rouge area. I found a lump in my breast and I have been to the doctor and not very confident in what their findings from the altrosound. My sister ask me to post this.

Im not sure if this doctor does breast cancer, but he is an oncologist and is or was the head of pennington cancer center at the Baton rouge General. His last name is Castine. He treated my best friends father for esophageal cancer that spread to the liver.
2 :
The Louisiana Cancer Research Consortium is probably your best bet. You can be seen at either LSU or Tulane. I've linked their page with both contacts so you can choose the one most convenient to your location. Both are excellent Medical Centers, and you will get the benefit of not only having a great attending doctor, but also having many other brilliant minds reviewing your case. In the event that it may be necessary, a teaching facility also has access to the latest research and clinical trial information and availability. Best wishes to you

If you sleep in your bra, will it increase the chances of having breast cancer

If you sleep in your bra, will it increase the chances of having breast cancer?
Please, if you are a doctor of this sort, will you answer this question because breast cancer runs in my family and my Great Grandma died of breast cancer.

psh, no YOU CAN'T GET CANCER FROM CLOTHES, kthx
2 :
i do not know
3 :
No. It can not. Sleeping in underwear though can cause you to get a yeast infection. Many women find it more comfortable to sleep in underwear or a bra.
4 :
no, I've never heard that one before.
5 :
whut the hell wow
6 :
No, I'm a man.... It will increase my chance of Divorce !!
7 :
I really don't think so.
8 :
Getting yourself checked regularly, making sure your blood sugar stays balanced (contracting no pre-diabetic syndromes), and general good health and eating habits will decrease your chances of breast cancer. Sleeping in a bra will neither increase or decrease your chances.
9 :
No, it's in your genes, not your bra.
10 :
it can do, it can restrict the flow of fluids around your breast, also if it is to tight or small. i wouldn't recommend it its best to have a bit of freedom.
11 :
Wearing an bra that does not fit can increase your risk of breast cancer. The longer you wear the bra the more your chances increase. My mother died of breast cancer and I had my first mammogram at 25. Check your breast and discus any concerns you have with your doctor. www.cbcf.org FACTS ABOUT BREAST CANCER IN CANADA* * Breast cancer is the most common cancer among Canadian women. * In 2006, over 22,000 women will be diagnosed with breast cancer and 5,300 will die of it. * Breast cancer survivors represent 1% of the female population. * 1 in 9 women is expected to develop breast cancer during her lifetime. One in 27 will die of it. * An estimated 160 men will be diagnosed with breast cancer and 45 will die of it. * In 2006, new breast cancer diagnoses will slightly double the number of lung cancer diagnoses among Canadian women. RISK FACTORS IN BREAST CANCER We do not know yet the cause of breast cancer. The most common risk factors for breast cancer are being a woman and aging. However, research is augmenting our knowledge daily and some specific factors have been identified as potential risk factors. These include: More than one first-degree relative (mother, sister) has had breast cancer Mutations of the BRCA1 and BRCA2 genes Past history of breast cancer or previous breast biopsy Early menstruation (before age 12) Women who have had no children or their first child after age 30 Alcohol consumption While the impact of diet and weight is still being investigated, evidence suggests a high intake of dietary fat may be related to an increased incidence of breast cancer. There are many myths and misconceptions about potential risks and causes of breast cancer. You are advised to discuss these concerns with a health care professional. Women with a history of breast cancer in their family should consult their physician to discuss their risk factors. Genetic testing is now available in many hospitals across Canada. HOW CAN YOU PROTECT YOURSELF FROM BREAST CANCER? Breast cancer cannot be prevented per se but research indicates that healthy lifestyle choices like a diet low in saturated fat and regular exercise may help reduce the possibility of developing breast cancer. Regular screening is also very important because the earlier the cancer is found, the more successful the treatment. No one detection method is foolproof. The Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation promotes the triad approach to breast health - breast self- examination (BSE) performed monthly, clinical breast exam performed annually by a qualified health care professional, and mammography every 2 years from ages 50-69 (or according to your provincial/territorial health plan), or where age or risk appropriate.
12 :
No, but if you hava a history of breast cancer you should start having mamographies at 35, and have your breasts checked anually.
13 :
Sleeping with a bra, it wont increase the risk of breast cancer.
14 :
Cancer is caused by any number of things. Sleeping with a bra hasn't been found to be one of them. I've done that myself. You should have a mammogram done regularly, though, because breast cancer can be hereditary. P.S. I'm not a doctor. I'm saying this from knowledge and experience.
15 :
In no way, shape or form can sleeping in a bra cause breast cancer. Some people wear a bra 24/7 because of comfort. Although Jessica B was snotty about it she is right, you can't get cancer from clothes. If you were asking if constant bra wearing could cause cell damage from the pressure, leading to cancer, the answer is also "no". However, there are genetic tests out now that can determine if you are a higher risk than normal to develop breast cancer. I believe they encourage women who have a strong family history of breast cancer to get screened. I do not know your age, but talking to your OB/GYN or Medical doctor may help ease your mind. You sound to me like this is really causing you some stress. Please talk to YOUR doctor so he/she can help make you feel better. Good Luck Hon... :)
16 :
No, Wearing a bra to bad has nothing to do with breast cancer. Cancer is the abnormality of cells. Breast cacer is from the inside of your breasts, so wearing a bra cannot change the internal cell build-up of your body.
17 :
Sleeping in bras does not cause cancer, but can cause marks and discomfort to your skin. Nobody wears a bra to sleep in

Can anyone give me information about breast cancer

Can anyone give me information about breast cancer?
Yesterday my mom told me that she had breast cancer. She said that it already spread to her lymph nodes, I don't know what that means. Can anyone tell me what it is and what are the chances of surviving.
Cancer - 7 Answers
Random Answers, Critics, Comments, Opinions :
1 :
I have experience with this matter. It means that the cancer cells have already spread to her nodes. Her chances around around 40%. The early you catch on, the better chances. I heard a university is working on a technology that uses a special radiology to completely destroy cancer cells without damaging your body.
2 :
It means her cancer started to spread and once it is in the lymph nodes it can spread to other parts of the body making it incurable. Breast cancer is very treatable, but there is no way to answer your question without more information there are too many variables, At a minimum we need to know her age, the type of cancer, the stage, the grade, tumor siize and her hormone receptor status.
3 :
My wife had breast cancer and it spread to three nodes. What this means.... It means that first your mom has breast cancer probably stage two because it left the site and entered the lymph nodes (just my guess without knowing much more about your mom's case) it could be possibly stage one. But staging aside....here is more information. It will be important for the surgeons and doctors to find out how many lymph nodes were cancerous. This could tell them how far it has gone to other parts of the body (if it has) then it would be even in later staging. Survival for five years after diagnosis is about as follows: stage 0-1 100-95% stage 2 85-80 % stage 3 54-52% stage 4 20% This is a very rough estimate (from previously read books and the top of my head) What needs to be considered: Getting the BEST available team of doctors in your specific area of the country together, a team that is easily accessible to your home would be perfect. But more important than that is that they are the best team that fights breast cancer. Breast cancer can be different from patient to patient. It is a cancer that happens to originate in the breast but ten people can experience the cancer differently. If caught early survival rates for this cancer are pretty good, the bad news is that treatment is harsh. Usually to survive breast cancer these medical procedures are part of the treatment: 1. Surgery To physically remove the tumor from the body. This should be done only by a surgeon that SPECIALIZES in breast surgery. You do not want it done by any other surgeon period. Surgery of the breast can be taking part of the breast away or if margins are not clear the entire breast. This surgery is not too bad and insurance covers reconstruction. 2. Chemotherapy These are toxins that enter the bloodstream and seek out the the cancer cells and destroys them (along with normal cells) the cancer cells are unable to repair themselves and die. Chemotherapy can be used before surgery to reduce the size of the tumor, or after surgery. The oncologist has several kinds of drugs that can be given and will determine what is best for your mom. Side effects vary according to each patient. What is typical is fatigue, your mom will need some help around the house. Don't expect her to do everything like she did before breast cancer. The family needs to pull together and help mom beat cancer. 3.Radiation They use radiation to destroy whatever cancer cells remain at the site of the tumor. It is usually daily for weeks at a time (taking time off for the weekends). It is usually very brief compared to chemotherapy treatments and some say not as hard on the body. It typically burns the area and darkens the skin. Creams are used to relieve pain. Hope this helps. Dave. Once cancer spreads beyond the lymph nodes it can settle into other parts of the body, like bones, and even the brain. If this happens then it is considered to be stage 4 breast cancer. I wish you the best, there are great sites on line about breast cancer. Try the American Cancer Society.
4 :
I am so sorry to hear that, depending on how early she found the cancer then if she does all the therapy she should survive so sorry!!!!!!!!!
5 :
This means her breast cancer is at stage 2 or stage 3, but still very treatable. The next 6 - 12 months is going to be hard on all the family, particularly your mother, so while it will be tough on you do whatever you can to make it easier on her. She will know more after seeing her oncologist to discuss treatments. Surgery, radiation treatment and chemotherapy are all likely.
6 :
I had 13 nodes removed. I'm considered a survivor. There's always hope. I had a bi-lateral mastectomy. I'll only say this...I have no breast but I don't care, I have life. I also had 10 tumors Where there life...there's hope. Have faith and be blessed. I pray your mom will be well. God bless
7 :
I wanted to answer but I've read the previous replies and understood that they have given you the comprehensive information on this matter. I just wish your family and, first of all, your mum to overcome this disease. God bless her

breast cancer is a malignant tumor that grows in one or both of the breast. Breast cancer usually develops in the ducts or lobules of the breast. The breast is made up of lobules, ducts, fatty tissue, blood vessels, lymph vessels, muscles, and nerves. The lobules are tiny sacs that make milk during breast feeding. The ducts are tubes that carry milk from the lobules to the nipple. The fatty tissue surrounds the lobules and ducts to provide support. Lymph vessels carry lymph to lymph nodes in the underarm, above the collar bone, and the chest. There is also lymph nodes located throughout the body. The body is made up of billions of cells that form our tissues and organs. In most organs cells are replaced on a regular basis, allowing each organ to continue to function normally. During this process the cells that die are replaced by new ones. Occasionally cells are replaced by abnormal cells, which grow in an uncontrolled way. As a result there is an abnormal growth or lump of cells that form tumor. As they increase in size, benign tumors can present as a lump in the breast. There are 2 kinds of breast tumors. Noncancerous tumors (benign) and cancerous tumors (malignant). If breast cancer is left untreated the cells may metastasize from the main tumor and travel to other parts of the body, commonly the bones, liver, lungs, or brain

Is it safe for a woman who's got breast cancer to get pregnant

Is it safe for a woman who's got breast cancer to get pregnant?
If you were told you got pregnant, and also you've got breast cancer. What would you do?
Pregnancy - 3 Answers
Random Answers, Critics, Comments, Opinions :
1 :
This would be something to discuss with your doctor.
2 :
I'd talk to my doctor. Only he or she can advise on treatments and how they might affect the baby, what the risks might be if you hold off on getting treated, and how to balance one with the other. If you're in this situation right now, you have a lot of hard choices ahead of you, and we can't tell you what to do.
3 :
Its not safe but many women find they have it in pregnancy and a lot depends on the stage of the cancer and how close delivery is-its never actually safe to wait for treatment but some women decide to risk it if its an early cancer and that is their choice, chemotherapy and radiotherapy cannot be used safely in pregnancy. Doctors would normally advise a termination, personally i think i would have to consider how much my existing children needed me alive and would terminate but that is just me
