I am scared my doctor called and I am supposed to go to a breast specialist because my mammogram came back he said it might just be calicus( negative mass) the place that did the mamogram sent me a letter to come back in 3 or 4 months for another mamogram. Can't they look at the mamogram and tell automatically if it is cancer or not? I always get regular annual mamograms and last year it was fine. should I be worried?

They have found something that is suspicious and MAY be cancer. This is why it needs to be investigated further. What they have found is probably smaller than a grain of rice and has developed since your last mammogram. Calcification may just be calcification - sort of solidified milk. It can occur at the site of a breast cancer tumour so this is why it needs to be monitored. Sounds like if this is the case your tumour is still too small to be detected. Your annual mammogram has paid off, if this is cancer it has been caught VERY early.

You cannot determine the chances of dying from breast cancer or needing chemo by whether or not you get annual mammograms. This is how most breast cancers are found. I don’t know what your doctor means by calicus, a benign mass is a fibroadenoma and this is not reason to send you to a breast specialist. They cannot always look at a mammogram and automatically tell if it is cancer or not. This mammogram should have been compared to the one you had last year making this a new finding. This is why they want you to come back earlier than usual. If this was suspicious the radiologist would have recommended a biopsy.

Coming from a family who has had much cancer in my family including breast cancer go as soon as possible and have it checked out. I know you are probably scared and worried, but it may be calicus like they say. I just had my mamogram done and the technician was explaining about the difference in cancer and calicus (a build up of calcium) as we were looking at my pictures on the computer screen they use now. First time I had it explained to me. If you do or don't have cancer, the earlier they catch any differences the more likely they can cure or remove it. My sister and niece had breast cancer and or cleared for over 5 years now. Put it in the Lord's hands and say your prayers, but go get it checked out. I pray you have the courage and good sense to do it. Its called growing up. Good Luck and God be with you. There is so much more they can do today.

Look, only 15% of cancer cases are cureless and breast cancer doesn't refer to this number. If you did the screening mammogram last year and everything was ok, don't worry. But don't postpone your visit to the doctor. Everything should be done on time. Go immediately and follow doctor's recommendations and cure. God bless you
