I just noticed that everything somehow squeezes in breast cancer awareness. they even have pink cows on farmville on facebook. why all of a sudden?? I think it's great that people are finally seeing the message, but I'm just curious as to why now.

Because, if you havent noticed, there is always a disease of the year kind of thing, sort of like a high school fad. A while ago it was lung cancer, now no body talks about it or has any awareness programs. Heart disease and arthrities are much more common than breast cancer, yet breast cancer is focused on like a laser beam. I don't know why or how they choose what disease focus on, potentially started out by a famous person suffering from the disease.

It's all about money. The pharmaceutical industry is nothing more than a big monopoly that profits off of you being sick, that is all. Just think of all the money they rake in from "research", "awareness", and "prescription drugs". Then think of how much they would make if they were to introduce cures, they would make next to nothing. Please do your own research.

Other cancers are just as important but barely ever spoken of

Originally the Estee Lauder company started the 'Pink' campaign 25 years ago. They wanted to help cancer patients, and have done a tremendous amount for us ever since. However, sadly other companies have realised that this is a massive field, and have jumped on the bandwagon, so that survivors like myself are sick and fed up with the pink tat that is around about now. What is even worse, here in Britain, is the cancer charities that follow the herd, and sell pink rubbish on their websites - one wonders how much of the amount raised actually goes to cancer patients. If you go to www.after-cancer.com/cancer-in-the-news I have a big rant on there! Please don't stop giving to cancer charities, but make sure you give where your donation will do the best - which is often for a small local cancer charity. And I don't want any fluffy pink teddy bears - I want mediclaly-proven skin creams that will sooth my 'druggie' skin caused by the cancer drugs. Verite R

Well, currently it's Breast Cancer Awareness month, which is why breast cancer is high profile 'all of a sudden'. But yes, breast cancer is generally much higher profile than other types of cancer., and the reason is simple - sheer hard work. People who campaign around illnesses are usually concerned with the illness that's affected them or their family. I know a couple who have a child with a very rare and life-threatening condition (not a cancer). Much of their time is now taken up with campaigning around this condition - fundraising and agitating for more funding for research, more education, more awareness etc. Individuals don't have unlimited time, and choose their campaigns. Similarly, breast cancer awareness campaigns and Breast Cancer Awareness Month were started by ordinary women, most of them with breast cancer or who had lost family members to breast cancer, to raise awareness so that people knew the symptoms, examined themselves regularly, attended their routine mammograms etc. Enthusiastic participation and hard work by women made it grow into something nationally, then internationally, recognised (and then big business cashed in). There are other cancer awareness months, ribbons etc; here's a list: http://www.cancer.org/docroot/MED/content/MED_1_Cancer_Calendar.asp - but no cancer campaign has had the sheer hard work put into it that breast cancer awareness has. Any group of people can start an awareness campaign for any illness - but if they want it to be as successful as the breast cancer campaigning, they'll have to be prepared to be as dedicated and work as hard. As someone in remission from breast cancer, I'm not actually a supporter of BC Awareness month and all the pink crap that goes along with it. I lean more towards the Think Before You Pink and Pink Stinks! campaigns, which were started by women with breast cancer too. http://thinkbeforeyoupink.org/?page_id=13
