Right now I'm 15. When I was 10 my mom got breast cancer, she died from it when I was 12. She was 43 when she passed away. This is just always on my mind... =/

It must be hard not to think about it when it was your mom, and it was so recent. For most women in the US, the chances of getting breast cancer in their lifetime are about 1 in 8. Some women have a gene that is known to be strongly related to breast cancer. Most typically, someone with this gene would have multiple female relatives who got breast cancer at a young age (younger than 50). There is a test they can perform, but they will not likely do that test on a 15-year-old, reason being that it is almost unheard of for someone so young to get breast cancer. When you are older, they may recommend that you get the test for the gene.

I'm sorry you lost your mother so young. Breast cancer isn't often hereditary - only 5 - 10% of all cases are. Where it's hereditary, it's due to a rare inherited faulty gene. If your mother's cancer was due to one of these genes, then you will have had a 50% chance of having inherited the gene from her. If you had inherited it, it wouldn't mean you would definitely get breast cancer; if you hadn't inherited it, your risk of breast cancer wouldn't be increased. If your mother has been the only one in your family to have had breast cancer, it's unlikely to have been hereditary. Your mother was very young for breast cancer; only 20% of all those diagnosed are under 50; only 5% are under 40, fewer than 0.1% are under 30 and it's almost unheard of in under 20s. Even in those rare families where breast cancer is hereditary, the chances of someone your age developing it are just about zero. Is there someone you can talk to about this; your father or an aunt perhaps
