Breast Cancer Awareness on the local Level

Breast Cancer Awareness on the local Level?
I've been searching for ideas on raising breast cancer awareness in my community. I tried organizing a local walk for breast cancer, but the necessary funding was completely unrealistic for a high school student. I'm a senior in high school, and I'm looking for feasible ideas that can help raise breast cancer awareness in my community. Thanks to everyone who replies!

Thank you for being concerned (I am a breast cancer survivor). I don't know where you live, but perhaps you might like to do something such as Dragon Boat racing? If you go to www.after-cancer.com/events there is more information, and also other ideas for fund raising. Good luck - and thanks! Verite R

Is Tamoxifen only effective if the cancer has not spread outside of the breast

Is Tamoxifen only effective if the cancer has not spread outside of the breast?
I read that Tamoxifen can be used in people in the advanced stages of breast cancer. Will it still be helpful at all if the cancer has spread to the lymph nodes?
Cancer - 1 Answers
Random Answers, Critics, Comments, Opinions :
1 :
Yes. Tamoxifen affects the entire body, not just the breasts. If the patient is receiving tamoxifen, that usually indicates that the cancer was "estrogen-receptor" and possibly "progesterone-receptor" positive. That means that it has a hormonal component and tamoxifen treats the hormone(s), wherever the cancer tissue might multiply, which would also be tumor present in the lymph nodes. Tamoxifen is the drug of choice for premenopausal women with varying stages of breast cancer

what is the probability of me having breast cancer

what is the probability of me having breast cancer?
im 20 years old and there are lumps on both of my breast the lumps can be moved around(i heard if can be moved around, its probably not cancer) the lumps does not hurt if i press it, just tingling a bit if i do it the nipple is not denting in like other cancer case i heard about and do you know how log cancer patient can live without getting any treatment?

You need to be treated. If the lumps are movable, they generally are not cancer but if not taken care of could become cancerous.See a Dr.
2 :
Get it checked out. It likely isn't cancer, but if it is, you're dead in months.
3 :
The risk of breast cancer at ages 16 - 20 is around 1 in 1 million. The risk of breast cancer in both breasts at the same time is even smaller. This does not sound like breast cancer. At your next annual check up get your Dr to check your breasts. This just sounds like what is "normal" for you.
4 :
None at all. You are lucky they move around. See your gynecologist. He will probably send you for an ultrasound. Relax, it's nothing.
5 :
The chances of breast cancer at your age ar so small as to be almost non-existent - it's pretty much unheard of. And the chances of it occurring in both breasts are smaller still. Fewer than 0.1%of all those diagnosed with breast cancer are under 30 and only 5% are under 40. Most (80%) are over 50. Most breast lumps, even in women over 50, aren't cancerous - over 80% of breast lumps considered suspicious enough for biopsy turn out to be benign

I am terribly afraid of developing breast cancer again

I am terribly afraid of developing breast cancer again?
I devoloped breast cancer at the age of 26. I am 32 years old now and I am terribly afraid of developing it again because everyone who i know who have had breast cancer before has always gotten it over again and I am also afraid that I am at risk for any other types of cancer as well. Do you feel that I am worried over nothing?

1 :
pray about it. have faith you won't.
2 :
ok I wanna start off by sayin.. that no matter how hard you pray, it's not gonna increase or decrease the chances of you getting it again. Your perfectly fine to have this feeling. Fear is one of the biggest emotions humans have, ecspecially if it is over something that has happened to you before and could happen again. Just as an example of my fear. I was driving down the highway about 3 months ago goin about 70 mph, and all the sudden my front right tire just exploded... I managed to get over an luckfully no one was hurt, but every time I drive my car on the highway now I always get worried every time I hit a bump, or the car gets a little shakey. The best way to get over this is to just try not to worry about it so much.. make sure you go to the doctor at least once a month and get a breast exam, so that you can at least be prepared if it ever does happen again... No matter how much you worry there is always gonna be the chance that it does show up again. But as long as you are getting checked often, then there will at least be a way to help prevent it.
3 :
i know how you feel my mother she had stomach cancer and then she had a you know what and she got it again and she well died I'm not trying to make you more frightened but just come done and just be aware relax i hope nothing bad happens PS. i feel sorry about for you.
4 :
I was diagnosed with breast cancer five years ago. My oncologist suggested that I consider genetic screening, where they check to see if you have a certain gene which may predispose you to be more likely to develop breast or ovarian cancer. You may want to discuss this with your oncologist to see if it is an option for you. If you had the gene, you would know to be very vigilant with your check-ups, and if you do not, then it might help you feel a bit of relief. I have my mamogram annually, and see my oncologist as recommended. I believe that I will remain cancer free, but I also know that it is important to keep an eye on things. Try to be positive that you will enjoy a long life, but do not neglect your check-ups.
5 :
pray!!
6 :
Well pray only if you believe in that sort of false sense security. Your fears are not uncommon. We have no control over tomorrow, but what we can control is prevention. First, you know to perform monthly or even more often breast exams. You know to follow up with your doctor and guessing by your age they will probably start to or already have started to perform mammograms. You must contact your provider if you see, feel or notice any changes in your breast health. If you feel any lumps, bumps, redness, scaly nipples, dimpled areas, shape changes, nipple discharge etc. you would contact your provider. But, please the hosptial that you recieved treatment at should have education and brochures for cancer survivor groups and breast ca groups. Good luck

Ethical Questions Arising from Hereditary Breast Cancer

Ethical Questions Arising from Hereditary Breast Cancer?
This is for a biology project, I need to find out some ethical questions arising from hereditary breast cancer. Any help is appreciated.

Some women find out they have the cancer gene , have prophylactic mastectomy's.Should this information be available ? How can it be used against you? Some insurance companies don't pay for routine mammograms.Should they ? The wealthy get better treatment at world class hospitals while others just use a local hospital. Should quality of life be considered when choosing a treatment plan ? Or is it just quantity we seek ?
2 :
If you have the cancer gene, should you have children? Will insurance companies start requiring genetic testing before they cover costs? (as in cover or not cover if it was possible genetic) And how would discovering you have the gene effect pre-existing condition clauses on insurance.
3 :
If you could get a DNA test that would show you are likely to get cancer, then it becomes an issue about insurance. If insurance companies know you are already going to cost them they may not cover you. How does a society deal with this? Perhaps because of this happening and not being able to be covered, then you probably wouldn't want a DNA test. What an problem!

Does anything besdes Breast Cancer cause dimpling of breast skin

Does anything besdes Breast Cancer cause dimpling of breast skin?
I've looked as best as I could online; and have pretty much come up empty-handed as to any other causes for dimpling of the skin on breasts; besides cancer. Are there any other conditions that could possibly cause this to happen?

1 :
Breast abscess Breast dimpling sometimes accompanies a chronic breast abscess. Associated findings include a firm, irregular, nontender lump and signs of nipple retraction, such as deviation, inversion, or flattening. Axillary lymph nodes may be enlarged. ▲TopBreast cancer Breast dimpling is an important but somewhat late sign of breast cancer. A neoplasm that causes dimpling is usually close to the skin and at least 1 cm in diameter. It feels irregularly shaped and fixed to underlying tissue, and it’s usually painless. Other signs of breast cancer include peau d’orange, changes in breast symmetry or size, nipple retraction, and a unilateral, spontaneous, nonmilky nipple discharge that’s serous or bloody. (A bloody nipple discharge in the presence of a lump is a classic sign of breast cancer.) Axillary lymph nodes may be enlarged. Pain may be present but isn’t a reliable symptom of breast cancer. A breast ulcer may appear as a late sign. ▲TopFat necrosis Breast dimpling due to fat necrosis follows inflammation and trauma to the fatty tissue of the breast (although the patient usually can’t remember such trauma). Tenderness, erythema, bruising, and contusions may occur. Other findings include a firm, irregular, fixed mass and skin retraction signs, such as skin dimpling and nipple retraction. Fat necrosis is difficult to differentiate from breast cancer. ▲TopMastitis Breast dimpling may signal bacterial mastitis, which usually results from duct obstruction and milk stasis during lactation. Heat, erythema, swelling, induration, pain, and tenderness usually accompany mastitis. Dimpling is more likely to occur with diffuse induration than with a single hard mass. The skin on the breast may feel fixed to underlying tissue. Other possible findings include nipple retraction, nipple cracks, a purulent discharge, and enlarged axillary lymph nodes. Flulike signs and symptoms (such as fever, malaise, fatigue, and aching) are common. ▲TopSpecial considerations Remember that any breast problem can arouse fears of mutilation, loss of sexuality, and death. Allow the patient to express her feelings. ▲TopPediatric pointers Because breast cancer, the most likely cause of dimpling, is extremely rare in children, consider trauma as a likely cause. As in adults, breast dimpling may occur in adolescents from fatty tissue necrosis due to trauma. ▲TopPatient counseling Provide a clear explanation of diagnostic tests that may be ordered, such as mammography, thermography, ultrasonography, cytology of nipple discharge, and biopsy. Discuss breast self-examination, and provide follow-up teaching when the patient expresses a readiness to learn. If a breast-feeding patient has mastitis, advise her to pump her breasts to prevent further milk stasis, to discard the milk, and to substitute formula until the breast infection responds adequately to antibiotic therapy
