It depends on the type of breast cancer and the stage of the disease.

Yes, chemo and radiation. Sometimes that doesn't work though. Getting your breasts removed can be a lot better and prevent spreading.

The type of surgery depends on the stage of the cancer and the size of the tumour. Breast tumours are sometimes removed by lumpectomy - removal of the lump and surrounding tissue. This surgery means the breast is saved, but the breast will not be the same as before - at the very least it will be scarred, and part of the breast will have been removed. But often it isn't possible to simply remove the tumour. In my case lumpectomy might have been possible, but as well as the tumour I had widespread DCIS, or precancerous cells throughout the breast; so the entire breast was removed. Chemotherapy and radiotherapy are never given instead of surgery; they are given in addition to surgery, though sometimes chemo is given first to shrink the tumour before surgery
