Can I ask my OB to test me for the breast cancer gene

Can I ask my OB to test me for the breast cancer gene?
I heard that there is a gene that some people carry that is linked to breast cancer. Will my insurance cover it if it's just elective. I wasn't for sure how this worked.

The Breast Cancer Gene test is expensive and most insurance company's will pay for it if necessary. Usually your mother should have the test - if she is negative then you and you siblings will be negative, and no other testing needs to be done. If she is positive and there is still a chance she did not pass it on to you. You will know if its in your family because you mom, grandma, aunts will all have breast cancer. No matter how you test negative or positive you will still need yearly mammograms.
2 :
I don't know about insurance as I live in the UK and our system is different. There are two faulty genes so far identified - BRCA1 and BRCA2. But it's unlikely that you would be referred to a specialist genetics services for gene testing unless you have a high risk of developing breast cancer - several blood relatives on the same side of the family who have had breast cancer. If either of your parents carries one of these genes, you have a 50% chance of having inherited it. If neither carries it, you won't. This link may give you the information you're looking for: http://www.breastcancer.org/risk/genetic/testing/
3 :
I did some research before I was tested. It costs about $1200 dollars and takes about 4-6 weeks to get the results. I was tested because I am a breast cancer survivor and so is another of my sisters as well as an aunt. I have 6 sisters and want to make sure everyone in my family takes care of their own health to the best of their ability. I do not have the known genetic mutations for breast cancer, However, there may be other mutations that can lead to breast cancer that have not been found yet. Other cancers run in my family, including colon cancer, Two of my sisters are also participating in the Sister's Study, a long term study of sisters of breast cancer patients.
4 :
Hello, Insurers try to limit this testing as it is expensive. You are probably talking about BRCA1 and BRCA2 genetic testing. Yes, any doctor can order it, but if you want your insurance to cover it you might want to talk with your carrier first. They will likely have criteria for covering it. Best Regards, John Di Saia MD

Why is that a person that has had breast cancer should not have their blood pressure taken from that side

Why is that a person that has had breast cancer should not have their blood pressure taken from that side?
I am a student of an MA program. This discussion came up.. Is it okay for women that have had breast cancer to have their blood pressure taken from the side the cancer was on?
Cancer - 9 Answers
Random Answers, Critics, Comments, Opinions :
1 :
'cause the doctor said so !
2 :
No. Always use the other side if possible. If it has been a double mastectomy, the most accurate is using the finger cuff to measure blood pressure. Likely lymph nodes have been removed on that side which will change the blood pressure reading.
3 :
the fact is that the person who has been operated for breast cancer should not have blod pressure checked from the arm of the same side.this is because the operation for breast cancer usually involves not only a partial or even complete removal of the breast but also the glands (lymph nodes) in the arm pits (axilla), cause breast cancer usually spread through glands and their drainage and the glands which are usually earliest involved are the ones in the armpits. However as a consequence of removal of these glands in the armpits, the drainage of lymph (a colourless fluid like blood) from the upper limb of the same side is impaired. so usually the upper limb on the same side might sometimes appear a bit swollen this lymph and the glands form a part of the immune system. so the localised immune system of the upper limb of the same side is relatively weakened. this is the reason why patients are asked after operation for breast cancer to take extra care for the arm s and hands of the same side, avoid cuts, pricks.. and also avoid bp being measured from the same side as measuring bp involves infation of the tied cuff, which tends to occlude the vessels temporarily.. thats ok for a normal person, but not for a patient who has got her lymphatics removed from her axilla. such people have more risks of ending up with a swollen arm (lymphedema)
4 :
Because they removed lymph nodes when they did a mastectomy, it is possible to develop lymphedemia if pressure is put on that arm. When you get it, you have it.
5 :
To put it simply, lymphatic fluid will rush in to help the arm if it perceives it to be under attack and then may have difficulty getting out because some or all underarm lymph nodes have been removed. If this happens the arm will swell; this is called lymphoedema and is irreversible, although it can be controlled. Someone who has had this operation shouldn't allow injections in or blood tests from the affected arm either, and should keep the arm moisturised, wear appropriate gloves when gardening, washing dishes or cleaning cat litter trays. Also try to avoid heavy lifting and clean any cuts, scratches etc to the arm and treat with antiseptic cream as soon as possible. She should also see a doctor immediately if a rash appears on the affected arm. These precautions are for life; I developed lymphoedema over two years after mastectomy and node clearance.
6 :
I have had a sentinell node biopsy and a lumpectumy and am in chemo right now. I have a hight grade cancer that is not estrogen receptive so the chemo is tough. But the answer to your question is. When they remove the tumour before they do that they do a sentinell node biopsy in the armpit area because thats where they will find out if the cancer has travelled so they remove the nodes and a pathologist checks them for cancer. Then they remove the tumour and then the pathologist checks the tumour. So once they have removed the nodes they have in effect changed the drainage system from your glands and this can cause lymphedema, so any pressure, cuts, needles, anything on the side of the sentinell node biopsy could cause lymphedema which makes the arm swell up with fluids that normally leave that area through the nodes, so no nodes, or nodes that have been taken out can cause this problem that's why a person who has had this procedure done should never have any blood removed, blood pressure checks etc. Hope this helps.
7 :
I was told because of the missing lymph-nodes under the arm anything restricting the blood flow is not good. Wearing a wrist watch, carrying a shoulder strapped purse etc. Wise to listen whatever the reason. Told to watch out carrying heavy or achward items. Believe them. After no problems for 2 yrs., I got careless & for a week I was in agony. My arm was so sore. Ok, now, but ouch.
8 :
no,blood pressure,no needles on the arm that the breast cancer was on.I know cause i had breast cancer on the r/side now i have it on the left side, plus i have lymodecancer in 85% of my body, they take my blood pressure on my r/calf.
9 :
because the removal of lymph nodes, we are told that to avoid any type of trauma, cuts, lifting, blood pressure taking, any blood samples etc. from that side could cause lymphedema. An infrequent complication of breast cancer treatment. Lumphedema is caused when too much lymph fluid collects in the tissue. This may happen because of the removal of the lymph nodes

sorry you have to deal with this hopefully this will send out a wake up call to others " keep your yearly examines! " and personal breast examine well what stage are you talking about is it in her lymph nodes? she might have trouble eatting and drinking depending on her therapy if she had therapy? i would buy her a gift pkg of herbal teas or flavored coffee etc, bath oils aroma therapy? comedy dvd might help , some woman don't mind being flat chested it depends on her breast size it takes a long time to prepare for implants theres alot of factors to consider, so loose blouses would be nice robe and slippers , what about gourmet chocolate Ferraro roche, dove? i always like the Hershey's miniatures? ?Ghirardelli make up a basket of comforting foods , you can always ask your teacher or neighbors and family or friends ? if you can have a fund raiser for your mom? or make assorted gift baskets stationary pens books games , chocolate basket? cheese and cracker basket, fruit basket? grocery basket? lots of times churches will have a thanksgiving dinner sent to homes? lots of things you can look into?...
15 :
Tell her you love her! It will mean the world to her. You can also spend time with her, sharing stories you remember about special times you and she have had together. Best wishes and good luck.
16 :
My mum had breast cancer as well but she only had one breast off so i know what your feeling like. Just try and be there for her, give her lots of compliments. I kept saying that a least it wasn't her life which was taken. You will find that if your there for her that you will form a closer bond between each other. You may feel as though there is nothing that you can do and that she is pushing you away but being there for her is the main thing. It is a life changing event but try and express your feelings to someone not hold them inside of you, just talking to someone lifts a whole load off your shoulders. I hope that will help you

Why do some Pro-Lifers lie about abortion causing breast cancer

Why do some Pro-Lifers lie about abortion causing breast cancer?
Abortion doesn't actually cause breast cancer or increase your risk of breast cancer. Women who abort lose out on a chance to reduce their risk of breast cancer, though. When someone says "It's just a fetus", they are telling the truth. If you don't care about it, since it is a fetus, it is just a fetus to you. :) People make that true. No matter how I look at certain Pro-Life arguments, I can't find any way they are true. I'd rather tell the truth and argue against my personal opinion than lie and misinform women.
Gender Studies - 24 Answers

1 :
so it scares people into not having an abortion.
2 :
Pro-Lifers hate abortion. They will do anything to make abortion seem less appealing. Including lie.
3 :
They tell all sorts of lies including preaching false biblical doctrine. If they put their efforts in ending world hunger or adopting all the unwanted kids, we would have a pretty decent world. But thats not the case, because at the end of the day, its not really about the unborn, its about control.
4 :
i think most of them are so dumb that they actually believe it its not necessarily a lie..just stupidity ...i'm with betty about it being about control...that and arm chair holier than thous...lots of talk & judgment, no action
5 :
You'd better do your homework. Ask any veterinarian - if you want your [dog, horse, cat, etc.] to have a much lower risk of breast cancer, spay it. The constant menstrual cycles of female mammals that don't get pregnant regularly causes the body to be subjected to a lot of hormones for which it was not designed. This greatly increases the risk of getting breast cancer. Only the abortion industry is denying that what is true for other female mammals is true for human females.
6 :
well you gotta think about it from where they are coming from. so many people are automatically like screw you abortion is great. i dont blame them for saying that they need to get some attention from people who are against it.. but on the other hand it could just be making their situation worse. they lie because they want to get attention about there concern alot of people dont give a crap or they're just saying they're pro- life and are all like yah blah blah it causes breast cancer but really they're just following the trend (they're fakes)
7 :
Yes agreed, they miss out on the chance to reduce their risk of breast cancer, as mothers have a slight protection afforded by pregnancy and childbirth hormones. On the other hand, certain types of cancer are more likely - I heard that ovarian cancer was less likely on the pill, plus pregnancy comes with its own health risks - varicose veins, post-natal depression, bladder weakness, prolapse etc. Basically, there are health risks attached to almost any decision in life. But whilst I double my chances of cancer by smoking and drinking, there doesn't seem much point worrying about a tiny increase in breast cancer risk :-)
8 :
They're just trying to support their side of the argument. Most evidence supported by the pro-lifers is not factual, and is based solely on religion or opinion.
9 :
because they don't actually care about what's best for the women involved in what could easily be a devastating situation if she didnt want the child. they care about tradition and family values. they care more about something that can't even feel pain and doesn't really know it exists until a few months in. sorry to rant, i just hate how disrespectful and self-righteous pro-lifers can be.
10 :
The problem is that these people are fanatical in their beliefs and will go to any length to deter people from abortion. I dont have a problem with them feeling the way they do but I do want to know who will pay for all the children they 'save' when the mother is too young or just unable to care properly for the kids. Yes there is fostering but, lets face it, not enough people do it and many kids fall through the cracks to end up living on the streets. Adoption is one solution but isnt that still giving away your child and who can be sure that the child will have a better quality of life? Its every womans right to decide for herself what she will do and these people do themselves no favour by not being honest and upfront. Abortion is not an easy decision for most women to make and is often a very painful memory. I have a friend who made this decision 2 years ago and is still trying to come to terms with her decision although it was then, and I think, still is the best she could have made. Dont assume all women look at it as an easy way out of a bad situation...quite often its done for good reason.
11 :
Because they are people. When people want something, they will do anything, including lie to get it.
12 :
First, Pro-Life is the wrong term - call it what it is - the Compulsorily Pregnancy People. They are so totally misguided that they will say and do anything - the truth has no relevance to them.
13 :
it's just scare tactics ... very unethical
14 :
Because they're lying sons of..... no, just kidding. Lol. Honestly, anything they can use to argue their ridiculous point they'll use.
15 :
I have never ever heard this. So I call bull crap an shananigains.
16 :
For the same reason pro-choice advocates claim abortion is safe. It's just an argument they find persuasive, even if it's not based in fact. The objective is to persuade someone to carry the pregnancy to term, so anything they can say to achieve that goal is fair game.
17 :
They'll say anything loosely based on a bullsh*t, nonexistent study just to get people on their side. What the f*ck does "pro-life" mean any way? Are trees and plants not living? Are animals not living? Are bacteria not living? What's the significance of saving a congregated group of cells? Do these motherf*ckers even know what it is they believe in? No. It's just another reason to be close-minded, spread hatred and disgust, and tell people how to live their lives. Look, it's not cool to abort a baby at, say, 6 months, but when the placenta has hardly formed-- well, who gives? These *ssholes really ought to research all of the negatives that come with going through with having a baby. Me, I'm Pro-death-if-and-when-necessary-and-or-logical. Example: I eat pork. Someone had to kill it sometime. Or I'd personally execute Bill O'Reilly given the lawful chance. Both seem logical and necessary. So does aborting a gooey, bloody, foreign thing in your uterus that can't even be called human yet when there are perceived complications to follow if you keep it.
18 :
That's a new one to me. I'd like to read more about that. Would you please provide a link. Thank You
19 :
you know why they do it.
20 :
All these types of special interest groups will say anything to get their way.
21 :
Beats me; I've never heard that. Furthermore, I don't see why denying unborn children such a basic right as life shouldn't be enough in and of itself without the link to breast cancer; if a woman has such a burning desire to take a life she should take her own rather than getting pregnant and taking the life of an unborn child that didn't choose to be conceived.
22 :
Breast cancer is a very common form of cancer. Using that kind of reasoning, it must mean that roughly one in every eight women has had an abortion.
23 :
They're taking the truth that a woman who gives birth has less chance of getting breast cancer because of the hormones released due to childbirth and twisting it around to "prove" a point. Pro-choicers do this too with other things of course. A good one is "it's just a fetus." Because, you know, scientific definitions completely define life. The definition was meant to denote what stage of development the unborn is in, not to try to say it's less than human.
24 :
because the pro-life movement is based on lies. they lie about how a fetus develops, they lie about how abortions are performed and they lie about the health risks of abortions. you'd think that if abortions really were terrible, they wouldn't have to lie. kind of makes you think

Are all stage 1 breast cancer patients with no lymph node involvement recommended to take chemo

Are all stage 1 breast cancer patients with no lymph node involvement recommended to take chemo?
What if a person has stage 1 breast cancer with no lymph node involvemet and have estrogen and progesterone negative tumors, will chemo strongly be recommended for that person especially if they are young? Also, I would like to know are positive estrogen and progesterone tumors very slow growing tumors? Are negative tumors faster growing?

Ok....trying to think back. I was diagnosed when I was 29. I was a stage 2 because of the size of one of the tumors. I had no lymph node involvement. I am er+, I had DCIS and invasive tumors, and I am Her2+ which means that my cancer was a little more agressive. I was strongly encouraged to do chemo because of my age when I was diagnosed, and I think for us early stage breast cancer folks, that is always the case....but I could be wrong. It's been 4 years and I still blame chemo brain. Anyway, I hope I answered your questions a little. Good luck

Because breast cancer is one of most common cancers in woman and has a high fatality too. Plus, your also supporting in the fight against cancer so in case if you get it you'll have a fast easy treatment with probably no side effects.
3 :
Would you like to see girls walk around with one boob? Lopsided boobs? Babies that cant get breastfed? A severe decrease in the women population? Which means a severe decrease in overall population? Btw, Guys can get it too. How awkward would that be if you couldn't get it fixed privately.
4 :
Chances are, you know someone who has been diagnosed with breast cancer, at least you will in your lifetime. It's important that we eliminate this horrible disease and support is the only way, through funds and research.
5 :
It's important to support breast cancer prevention because it's one of the most common cancers that has excellent prognosis if detected early, but metastasizes very quickly if not detected early. Early prevention, detection, and education can literally save a lot of lives. That being said, I really wish there were similar campaigns for colon and prostate cancers- those are also very common cancers that have excellent prognosis if detected early, but poor if detected late.

My Personal support from Breast cancer donations saved my life I lost my job over this and had no medical insurance and 1 chemo. treatment cost 8.000 dollars not counting 36 treatments of rad.it also tries to help researchers find a cure I wish they they could find a cure for all cancer.God bless all the people involed in curing cancer.
7 :
Breast cancer is one of the most preventable and treatable cancers today thanks to new innovations in early detection and treatment. This is partly due to it's widely advertised/promoted (and sometimes commercialized) status. Breast cancer awareness has reached more eyes and ears than any other in the media, and literally has more volunteers and participants than volunteers for a presidential campaign. It's important to support it because it's one of the most common cancers in women along with ovarian and uterine cancer. We can all testify that we've seen more promotion of this disease than ever before. Walk down any store isle and you'll see Pink Ribbons on lots of products that donate. Talk shows and news programs dedicate entire time slots to its awareness. I've even seen the Pink Ribbon on cereal boxes. Wow. More than ever before, it seems to be "hip" to show its support. But this is by NO MEANS a bad thing. Due to it's "commercial" success, it has generated hundreds of millions of dollars in funding for research in prevention, detection, and treatment, as well as financial assistance programs for those that cannot afford screenings or are under insured or have no insurance. Komen.org wants to give away $100 million this year alone, and I think that may be a record. Thanks to advancements, more people are living longer through awareness, early detection, and improved treatment options. This country alone has thousands of charities in its support, and that's great. It would be wonderful if all cancers, diseases, poverty, illiteracy, etc. received as much press and attention. Thanks to a CT scan mammography they found my wife's breast cancer. 20 yrs ago they wouldn't have found it until it had gotten larger and been seen by normal x-ray. Want to help? Donate to komen.org or cancer.org. Another way to help is to buy a gasoline card and donate it to your local hospital for them to give to someone that can afford the gasoline to go to an appointment to screening or follow up care. Hope this helps. Mark the charityplush.com team
