Well, lately, someone near and dear to me has stated that she felt a burning feeling on the skin of her left breast. She stated that it wasn't the entire breast, but more like the skin area about the size of the tip of her middle finger. She also stated that whenever she pushes onto it, it just burns... It is kind of hard for me to explain it myself, but I was wondering if this was a possible sign/symptom of inflammatory breast cancer. I asked her about it and she plans to get a mammogram on the 20th of this month.

It does not sound like it, (but it is good she is getting a mammogram) the symptoms sound more like you get from an infection, with the temperature of the skin actually feeling warm to the hand that is touching it.

My wife presented with an area that was red, warm to the touch and burned/itched. The area had the signature orange peel look to it. So in as few words as possible, yes. Mammograms will not typically pick up IBC. A punch biopsy is the method of diagnosing this monster. Now , take a second for a big breath. IBC is very rare so it is not likely to be the case here. On the other hand, get her butt into see a breast specialist or OBGYN that knows what IBC looks like. I wish you the best of luck.

A mammogram typically won't detect inflammatory breast cancer. You would need a punch biopsy to know for sure. She really shouldn't wait to get checked though, as IBC is very serious. It's the most aggressive form of breast cancer there is.

This is nothing to play with...as described, it could well be IBC but mastitis will be the first thing to be ruled out. She shouldn't wait till the 20th to have this looked at by a specialist. As was previously stated, mammograms often miss early stages of IBC especially in women with dense breasts...a biopsy is imperative if it turns out not to be mastitis. IBC is the most aggressive form of breast cancer and has usually metastasized at time of diagnosis. Encourage your friend to see a physician as soon as possible! Good luck to you
