I was let go from my job about a year ago and haven't had medical insurance since then. I've was diagnosed with breast cancer last week and have to undergo a masectomy to remove the tumor. Are their insurance companies that will offer coverage to people with preexisting condtions?

Please accept my sincere wishes for a complete healing. Individual health policies routinely exclude pre-existing conditions. Moreover, given that you've been diagnosed with cancer, it is highly improbable that you will ever be covered under an individual health plan.

Best wishes to get well. You probably can't get a plan. The idea of insurance is that you continuously pay money to a pool so that the sick can draw out the money when they need to. One does not get insurance when she is sick. One gets insurance when she is well, and pays into the pool to help others. The preexisting condition clause prevents people from cheating the system, not having contributed to the health of others from all of a suddenly demanding a $100,000 cut from the pool. A member of the pool needs to have continuously contributed to the pool.

No. You'll have to go to your state for coverage. Look up '(your state) high risk pool.' It'll be expensive, but hopefully it'll cover you.

Through an employer, yes. Or, through your state high risk health pool, but there's usually a wait of 18 months for preexisting conditions. You're going to be out of pocket for the next 18 months, and unless you're in a "guaranteed issue" state, you're not going to find an insurance company willing to give you a policy, for at LEAST the next ten years. Sorry about this. Maybe you can qualify for welfare health insurance - medicaid - or you can get married and added to your spouse's policy.

~~It depends on your state. In California you have an option of guaranteed coverage, it's just the premiums are so high it is out of the question for most people. If finances are hard right now call your county or state health department. There may be options available through their programs. Best of luck and I hope your recovery goes well.~~
