What are the symptoms of breast cancer

What are the symptoms of breast cancer?
I found a lump on my left breast but i'm not sure if it's cancer (i hope it's not)....but i'm making an appointment with the doctor to get it checked out. It doesn't hurt or anything. This lump looks like a bruise & it keeps getting darker. I also found a long strand of blonde hair near the area. I'm not blonde but this made me scared :/ Are there any other things i should look out for? I already asked this question before but didn't get enough answers. Peace xx

You don't give your age, which is an extremely important factor in considering the possibility of breast cancer. If it looks like a bruise, it's almost certainly a bruise. Bruising or bruise-like marks is not a symptom of breast cancer. Breast cancer is mainly a disease of ageing, with 80% of those diagnosed being over 50; the average age at diagnosis is a little over 60. Only 5% of those diagnosed are under 40, fewer than 0.1% are under 30 and it's almost unheard of in under 25s. Most breast lumps, even in women over 50, aren't cancer; 80% of breast lumps considered suspicious enough for testing are found to be benign.
2 :
I was diagnoised with breast cancer on March 16, 2010. I found my own lump. I had no hair growth to report, I had pain athough, it was a small lump. I did not have any brusing or discoloration of the skin. Hope that helps. Just go to the doctor - early detection is very important if it is something significant. Good luck.
3 :
Usually pain free at first and usually in women over 40. It takes a long time of too much estrogen to make a place for it to grow and a trauma to depress your immune system to allow it. Long term breastfeeding or nipple stimulation prevents it as the hormone prolactin counter acts estrogen. Good luck

Why is there more focus on breast cancer than prostate cancer when both kill equally

Why is there more focus on breast cancer than prostate cancer when both kill equally?
The NFL is a host of...yes, Breast Cancer. The commercials on Fox today supported Breast Cancer and not prostate cancer. Both are equally deadly but we see more "breast cancer" because it is PC. If you disagree, you are retarded (hate to say it).

Because everybody loves breasts!
2 :
Actually prostate cancer kills more men than breast cancer kills women. Funding for diseases are not always rational. Breast cancer had a strong champion in the feminist movement who were campaigning for more focus on women's health issues. I know it seems unfair that this focus still exists, as in general women are healthier than men. Unfortunately health care and politics mix together. But this doesn't take away from the fact that breast cancer is a serious issue and while we should also fund and support initiatives related to prostate cancer, we shouldn't ignore breast cancer.
3 :
Although they are both very common perhaps breast cancer is more common than prostate cancer

What Are My Chances of Breast Cancer

What Are My Chances of Breast Cancer?
I'm 17, and I'm a really bad worrier. So, I was just curious of the chances I could get breast cancer. I know it's rare for a girl my age to get it, but. My family has only 1 record of breast cancer in an older family member. And I have fibromyalgia, so I can't judge it correctly for tenderness, when any pressure hurts. I'm not very healthy, and I'm a vegetarian, can my diet effect my chances as well? If you could just calm my nerves, I'd really appreciate it!

This article might help you: Breast Cancer Symptoms - How to Detect Before it is Too Late http://www.inform.websiteuniversity.org/Article/Breast-Cancer-Symptoms---How-to-Detect-Before-it-is-Too-Late/127760
2 :
Your chances are the same as every other female 1 in 8 over your lifetime. At 17 it is 1.3 in 1 million. Tenderness is not a symptom of breast cancer and self exams are not recommended at your age. What you eat does not matter.
3 :
You have a one in eight chance of developing breast cancer over a lifetime of around 80 years. You have just about no chance of developing it at 17. It isn't 'rare' for a girl your age to develop breast cancer, it's just about unheard of - if it happened your case would be newsworthy and would be written up in medical journals the world over - it would be of HUGE interest to the medical profession as very, very, very few of the world's doctors have seen a teenager with breast cancer. I was diagnosed with breast cancer at 50; I was allocated to the breast care nurse whose special interest was 'breast cancer in younger women' - because I was still pretty young for breast cancer. Breast cancer is hereditary in only 5 -10% of cases; breast cancer diagnosed after the age of 50 is even less likely to be hereditary. Breast tenderness is not a breast cancer symptom - most people diagnosed with breast cancer have felt no pain at all. Breast cancer, like other cancers, affects the healthy and the unhealthy alike. And there is no evidence that diet affects your chances. As for vegetarianism - I went vegetarian at 16 and vegan at about 40; through breast cancer support networks I've met three other vegans with breast cancer and dozens of vegetarians with it. It makes no difference either way. Stop worrying - you don't have to be concerned about breast cancer for many years yet.
4 :
No, your diet is great to be honest. Better for you to be a vegetarian than anything else. Also breast cancer doesn't hurt. I am 43 and I have Breast Cancer. I would have never known it was there hadn't it been for my yearly mammogram. (Which isn't even necessary for you until your 30's!) So you really have nothing to worry about at your age. At 43 they think "I" am to Young. Imagine That! So it is Extremely safe to say you have absolutely NOTHING to worry about.
5 :
I agree with Dennis. One addition: High fat diet is a proven risk factor to breast and colon cancer
6 :
Think positive. Think of happy moments and stop thinking and worrying that you will get cancer. The power of the mind is strong so just think you will not get it. I had my breast cancer at the age of 62. Have a momography test to have peace of mind.Breast cancer does not hurt. In my experience it is a hard flat lump near my nipple. I just discovered it while I was taking a shower and accidentally touched it. Have a physical check up with your doctor to be sure you have no breast cancer

Breast implants increase risk of breast cancer

Breast implants increase risk of breast cancer?
Just wondering if getting breast implants increases a person's risk of breast cancer? I've heard that somewhere before. Thanks.
Cancer - 3 Answers
Random Answers, Critics, Comments, Opinions :
1 :
There is no research that shows implants increase the risk of breast cancer. At one time (decades ago) there was a problem with leakage from implants, which could form lumps elsewhere, not necessarily cancerous. There is some risk that the implant may disguise the development of a cancerous lump, so it is slower to be detected, but this is not a significant risk.
2 :
I"m pretty sure that they DECREASE the risk if you have a family history and ask the doctor to do so. The doctor will suck all the tissue out and just put implants in. I saw this on a show.
3 :
There are no scientific studies indicating that breast implants cause cancer. If such studies existed, then the FDA would likely halt the manufacture, sale, and surgical implantation of synthetic breasts. However, there is anecdotal evidence that breast implants may cause health problems over time. While the salt water that modern implants contain cannot harm recipients, the implant's plastic encasement may deteriorate and release substances into the body. Like everything else in life, there is certain level of risk. 20 years from now there will be so much new data on implants that everything believed true about them today could be proved false. For example, back in the 1950s cigarettes were a considered to be a healthy alternative to cigars. In the early 1900s cocaine was a medication to sooth cranky babies. The passage of time often reveals the truth about a product's safety

Is there a connection between abortion & breast cancer

Is there a connection between abortion & breast cancer?
I read an article this past weekend about some kind of connection between 1st trimester abortions and breast cancer. Is this true? Has anyone heard of something similar to this? The article in whole was talking about a certain group of people who were for extreme population control. It was very interesting but I don't know how much to believe of it.
Cancer - 11 Answers

1 :
This is an urban legend. There are no scientific studies to prove this. Only studies from people that have an agenda. My daughter-in-law works in cancer studies all around the world.
2 :
no, not true
3 :
Ah! you seem to be good at finding connections......but sorry, there is no connection between abortion & breast cancer.
4 :
more than likely it's pro-life fuckers trying to scare you out of having abortions.
5 :
There is no link whatsoever between the two.
6 :
Population control should be about preventing unwanted pregnancy not abortion. I am pro choice but I believe in prevention first and foremost. As far as a link to breast cancer that is wrong. Or at least not a proven fact.
7 :
No, there isn't a cause-and-effect correlation. Instead, earlier studies reported that women who don't have children are a little more likely to get breast cancer. A woman who has an abortion can't have that child, so right-to-lifers claim abortion causes breast cancer. More recent studies argue against a link, and say studies positing such a link are unreliable: "A major new study on the relationship between abortion and breast cancer suggests that pregnancies ending in abortion do not increase a woman's risk of developing breast cancer. . . . Researchers say previous studies that suggested having an abortion slightly increases a woman's risk of breast cancer were flawed because they were based on women reporting having had an abortion after a diagnosis of breast cancer, known as a retrospective study." -- http://www.webmd.com/news/20040325/study-dispels-abortion-breast-cancer-link "The likelihood that women who have breast cancer will give a more complete account of their abortions than women who do not have breast cancer is called "recall bias," and it can seriously undermine the accuracy of study results. . . . The topic of abortion and breast cancer highlights many of the most challenging aspects of studies of human populations and how those studies do or do not translate into public health guidelines. The issue of abortion generates passionate viewpoints among many people. Breast cancer is the most common cancer, and is the second leading cancer killer in women. Still, the public is not well-served by false alarms and at the present time, the scientific evidence does not support a causal association between induced abortion and breast cancer." -- http://www.cancer.org/docroot/CRI/content/CRI_2_6x_Can_Having_an_Abortion_Cause_or_Contribute_to_Breast_Cancer.asp There are a lot of websites out there that say there's a direct connection, but they are usually biased. Having an abortion shouldn't be taken lightly, but the risk of breast cancer shouldn't be a factor for a woman trying to decide whether or not to have one.
8 :
No there isn't. The anti-abortion movement has sought unsuccessfully to prove that there's a link. For example, 'The Breast Cancer Epidemic', a study conducted by the London based Pension and Population Research Institute takes data from 8 Euripean countries and purports to establish that there are 7 risk factors, of which abortion is the most reliable predictor of breast cancer. The study is seriously flawed, for example it finds an increase in abortion and breast cancer in some countries, but offers no data to suggest this is among the same women (ie there was in increase in both, but no evidence that the women who'd had abortions were the same women who developed breast cancer). And the study was funded by the anti-choice group, Life. A link between abortion and breast cancer is a myth; junk science and propaganda from the anti-choice lobby. The broad scientific consensus is that no such link exists. This excellent article gives the facts: http://findarticles.com/p/articles/mi_m1374/is_2_62/ai_83794478
9 :
there is a lot of myths on what causes cancer. no, not bras, no not deodorant, no not abortions, no not cigarette's. alot of things can contribute to cancer, but cancer is caused by the mutation of abnormal cell growth.
10 :
No, there is not.
11 :
I don't believe that the 2 have anything to do with each other. I think it is a myth. I think that we need to visit the dr and do self exams and stay a s educated as possible. I really hope that they can find a cure someday soon. My father is a cancer survivor and we participate in our Relay For Life. It is an extraordinary fundraising event sponsored by the American Cancer Society. I was so proud watching my father walk in the survivor lap. Words cannot describe it. I found an article that you may be interested in about breast cancer. Take care

after having breast surery from breast cancer can it spread into the side of your breast

after having breast surery from breast cancer can it spread into the side of your breast?
my mother had right breast surery done on the right side now she is having the same pain on the left side, after having breast cancer surery will it spread into the other side.

I'm sorry to hear about your mother. Unfortunately once the patient has had cancer it could spread anywhere. Hope she has had it checked out?
2 :
It could be a new tumor that had begun to grow on that side, but I am sure the doctors would have done tests to see that was not the case otherwise they would have taken care of it at the time of the surgery on the right breast. It could just be pain from having it done, but I would have her get a check up on it just in case. Sorry about mom, at least the surgery is not too bad physically, could be psychologically. Have her get it checked out.
3 :
This is possible, which is why follow up appointments with your oncologist are so important after cancer treatment. My mother had a lumpectomy on one side, followed by a lumpectomy on the other side, followed by a mastectomy on the 2nd side over several years during my adolescence. She then had remission for many years before developing a tumor in the shoulder near the mastectomy site which went undiagnosed for some time. Further spread of this cancer eventually killed her. My sister and I are both in remission after breast cancer (15 years ago for sister, 5 years abo for me). I am suprised you mention pain, as pain is rarely associated with breast cancer.
4 :
Sweetheart, I understand exactly what your mother is going through. I had a mastectomy in 2007, then in Nov of 2008 I not only had a second mastectomy, but the Oncologist had to redo my first one because my surgeon was not a specially trained Dr to mastectomies and he left in a huge amount of diseased tissue. When he removed the excess tissue, he found another tumor. However, it doesn't mean your mother's cancer or mine spread to the other side. It means it happened to found at different times. It was there before. we didn't know it at the time. Does you mom have a qualified surgeon? I only ask because of what happened to me and I don't want it to happen to any other women. I joined a support group and speak out against this sort of thing and warn women everywhere, make sure their surgeons are specailly trained to mastectomies or you could end up with additional surgery. My Dr told me there was so much residual tissue left, it was like doing a double mastectomy and he felt bad. But you know what the most important thing is? It doesn't matter to me that I have no breast, I have life now. Now I can enjoy my grandchildren and my children for a long time to come. There's always reconstructive surgery or prosthetics. I chose prosthetics. No more surgery for me if I can help it. Tell you mother you are both in my prayers. I feel she will do great. She needs you to help her out a lot now and I know you know that. You're a good daughter. Be blessed ADD By the way, I am really getting sick of people saying there is no pain associated with breast cancer. Yeah I know, my Dr told me the same thing, but I had terrible pain that's what made me check. So did my sister and 2 nieces. Just because the norm is no pain for most, doesn't men that you won't have pain. Everyone is different and I wish people would stop saying that. Please.
5 :
Yes it can. My wife is a survivor. She had breast cancer. That is the reason your mom , has got to get check every six month. For the first year or so. Then after that it is once a year. But she has got to eat well. Best of all you be there for her. Talk to her and give her lots of love.
6 :
Unfortunately, yes It can, hon. You and your mum are in my prayers.
7 :
while doing first breast surgery doctors must have checked the other one also. so less chances. spread is possible if she had not gone for check ups. during check up we examine any spread to other parts through blood stream. if doubted she must have mammogram and opinion from oncologist
8 :
If you've had cancer anywhere it can spread anywhere, even if the surgeons think they have removed all of it. Your mother should see her doctor ASAP
